What is Mental Health First Aid?
Great Question! If you’ve ever done a traditional first aid course, you’ll know that first aid teaches you how to help someone treat minor injuries, or provide immediate care in a medical emergency, sometimes even saving a life. Mental Health First Aid is similar, but focussed on the persons mental health.
Just like traditional first aid, Mental Health First Aid teach you lifesaving skills and knowledge to help others. We do this by learning how to identify when someone may be experiencing a mental health problem, or is in crisis, and supporting them to access professional help, as well as learning about other supports such as self-care strategies that can be used by both the Mental Health First Aider, and the person they are assisting.
Just like in traditional first aid, we’re not learning to be doctors or psychologists, but we are learning crucial skills to help others in times of need, suffering, or even crisis.
